Reopening Update
Dear RISE Stakeholders, Parents & Students,
On March 15, 2021, in Los Angeles County and across California, the less-restrictive Red Tier was achieved. Although we are still considered to be in a substantial risk status for COVID 19, this allows RISE High learning sites to expand from its 1:1 assessment appointments started in October 2020 to provide additional services to our students through a 3:1 service model.
RISE administration and staff have been actively gathering updated input from students, parents, co-location partners and staff to design reopening schedules for learning sites in order to expand learning options for students. We are also very pleased to announce that RISE staff have received access to the COVID-19 vaccination through coordination from the DV Central Office, City of El Segundo and the LA County Office of Education Charter School Office.
The DV: LA County Board RISE High approved these reopening site plans at the regularly scheduled board meeting held on March 24, 2021 and provided administration direction to continue the phased planning approach for additional scheduling options after the first two weeks get underway. Based on this direction, we are planning for the following schedules to be in effect on April 12, 2021.

Da Vinci RISE is committed to the safety and security of our school community. We will continue to monitor the reopening decisions closely and await Red Tier and the potentially Orange Tier update written guidance from the County by the end of April 2021. As we are authorized to serve more students onsite, we will continue to elicit your feedback in the process. Please review the following parent support materials linked here. These documents focus on health and safety protocols and aim to answer your questions to assist in this transition. Students that are scheduled to be on campus from April 12, 2021, forward will also receive 1-1 training to ensure safety protocols will be followed.
As you may know, DV Schools administration and staff have never wavered in our commitment to equity while safely reopening our school sites. As we move through reopening phases, we will continue to offer our hybrid online learning program while increasingly affording onsite options to students who are unable to access conducive learning environments or adequate resources from home. At this juncture, as we move into Quarter 4, these factors are guiding our decisions. This includes:
- Continuing 1-1 appointments,
- Providing stable learning groups,
- Determining staff availability,
- Evaluating on-campus student movement,
- Investigating supervision needs, and
- Preparing outdoor learning environments
RISE has demonstrated time and time again that utilizing a deep reflection, analysis, and feedback cycle process supports our procedures to keep our staff and students safe and healthy.
If you have any specific questions relating to your son/daughter’s personalized learning plans or changes to their school schedule, please reach out the site administrator listed below:

DV RISE Stakeholder/Parent Guardian Return to Campus Survey
Dear Da Vinci RISE Families,
Thank you to those of you who were able to join us at our DV Schools Virtual Town Hall for Families held on March 2nd. If you missed the meeting, you can check out the recording. A Padlet to capture additional input and review other comments is located here.
We are following up with a more extensive survey to gather your input as we plan for a phased reopening in April. Da Vinci RISE has prioritized students returning to campus through review of on-site appointments first and then will be reviewing options for small cohorts/groups on each of its learning sites.
Please complete the survey by the evening on Sunday, March 12th, so that we may incorporate your input into our reopening plans that will be up for board approval on March 24th. Staff will be reviewing options for all three learning sites, A Place Called Home, Hawthorne & New Earth.

Student-Led Conference Week: 2/1 – 2/5
Student-Led Conferences
Student-Led Conferences will be held Monday, February 1st – Friday, February 5th. At Da Vinci Schools, Student-Led Conferences are a graduation requirement designed to facilitate student reflection on their learning and growth. The goal is to model self-reflection so that students learn to constantly monitor their own progress and identify ways to strengthen their learning and accelerate their growth. SLCs also give teachers, advisors, and student stakeholders an opportunity to identify strengths and areas of growth so that they can better support students towards their goals.
To best accommodate a wide array of schedules, we will also be offering extended hours for SLC appointments on one day during the week. APCH will have appointments from 11-6:00pm on Thursday, February 4th. New Earth and Hawthorne will have appointments from 11-6:00pm on Wednesday, February 3rd. Every RISE student has an advisor, who is working to reach out, prepare and schedule your student’s SLC. If you have not been notified, please reach out to your students advisor (all information listed in their Personalized Learning Plan, STAFF DIRECTORY LINKED)

Congrats to our December 2020 Graduates ♥
The RISE High family is PROUD to congratulate our December graduates! You have defied the odds during an incredibly challenging time and we couldn’t be more inspiredby your resilience and determination to reach your goals. This is just the beginning of your journey, always remember your RISE family has your back!
Advisory at RISE!
EVERY SINGLE student at RISE has an advisor. Advisors are staff members who are there to support students with academic progress, socio-emotional development and coaching through the year. Students must attend AT LEAST 4 one-on-one check-ins with their advisor each quarter. Students should also register for their selected 6 workshops (1 college and career, 1 social emotional and 4 of their choice). Completing these tasks not only provides students with tools to succeed, but also provides them with 2.5 credits that can work to boost their GPA. Though advisory credits do not count towards high school graduation, they are used to pump up our student’s GPAs to make them even more competitive for college acceptance, internships, job opportunities and more.
College and Career/ Senior Workshops!
College and Career workshops are an excellent resource for students looking for employment or interested in future job opportunities. This workshop is open to all students and occurs on Wednesdays from 2:30—4:00pm.
Senior Workshops are for RISE students who are “Senior Status” or “approaching senior status”. This workshop supports our seniors with all post- and pre-graduation needs (applications, college essays, interviews etc.)
Senior Status – 30 Credits or less remaining
Approaching Senior Status – 30 – 45 Credits remaining
EL Workshop
English Language Learning workshop is designed to support students for whom English is their second language. This class is to provide additional tutoring to support your academic progress! Students can earn up to 2.5 credits in their English classes for attending (.5 credits), making Lexile growth (.5 credits) and completing Achieve 3000 articles (1.5 credit).
Schedule Breakdown
All student schedules are included in their Personalized Learning Plans! Students should be working on their assignments in-between classes to ensure they are making adequate academic progress. During “Independent Work time” students are able to reach out to their teachers for additional one-on-one or small group support. ALL staff contact information is located the Da Vinci RISE Staff Directory.
Parent Workshop
Principal, Erin Whalen and Site Director, Da’John Harris will be leading a parent workshop on Thursday, January 21st, 2021 at 5:00pm via Zoom. We will be there to help our parents learn how to read the student schedule, navigate DreamSeeDo and help be a support system to your student to ensure they are making adequate progress at RISE!

Despite the challenges this year presented, these students persevered with focus, determination and strength. These scholars have successfully exhibited our RISE High tenants by demonstrating that they are Empowered Citizens, Skilled Problem-Solvers, Effective Communicators, Tactful Collaborators and Critical Thinkers. Special thanks to the RISE staff for supporting our students to and through the finish line. Thank you to the amazing Samuel Aragones for creating this fantastic video for our scholars. Congratulations to the December class of 2020! This is only the beginning.
