MAP Testing This Wednesday & Thursday

Dear DV RISE Students and Families,

It’s time for MAP testing again! On December 4th and 5th, all students of Da Vinci RISE High will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA®. You can read our previous blog post about MAP Testing (linked here) to learn more about the test and the information it provides about your student’s literacy and math levels.

It is incredibly important that students are present and prepared to participate in testing, as the outcomes provide essential information that helps teachers individualize instruction for your student.

Please ensure that your student is present at school this Wednesday & Thursday and is prepared to begin testing promptly at 9:10.  See below for recommendations on how students can prepare to be successful on the tests, and please reach out to us with any questions or concerns.

How to Prepare Before Testing:

  • Take some time to review your class notes and materials
  • Ask your teachers for help on any concepts you may not understand
  • Make sure to get a good night of rest and at least 8 hours of sleep the night before each assessment.
  • Make sure to eat a healthy breakfast on the morning before assessments. (Breakfast is provided at both RISE locations)
  • Arrive to school early so you have adequate time to settle into your classroom and to avoid feeling rushed

Modified Class Schedule for MAP Testing
Please plan for your student to be in attendance from 9:10am – 3:00pm in order to allow adequate time for both MAP testing and regular class attendance. The modified schedule is included below:

Family & Stakeholder Collaborative Meeting

On Tuesday, November 12, RISE held its first Family & Stakeholder Collaborative (FSC) meeting of the year. If you were unable to attend, you can view the presentation deck HERE.

If you’d like to make suggestions for workshops you would like RISE to offer, please view the questionnaire linked HERE, and email your preferences to Kari Croft at kcroft@davincischools.org.

And finally, please make plans to join us at future FSC meetings! The dates are below.

  • January 28
  • April 14
  • May 12

Join us November 12 for Family & Stakeholder Collaborative!

What is Family & Stakeholder Collaborative?

FSC is the RISE’s version of a PTA/PTO. We have renamed it to ensure a more inclusive space for all student supporters, including parents/guardians, family members, social workers, CASAs, and more.

Throughout the year, we use FSC meetings as opportunities to build stronger relationships, to have a forum for amplifying parent & family voice, and to collaborate in efforts to constantly strengthen student support at RISE. We deeply value family & stakeholder input, and we’d love to have you join us at the meeting times below!

When are the meetings?

  • Tuesday, November 12, 2019  <PLEASE NOTE THE DATE AND TIME CHANGE>
previously scheduled for November 5 at 4:30 pm

    • 5:30 – 6:30pm
  • Tuesday, January 28, 2020
    • 5:30 – 6:30pm
  • Tuesday, April 14, 2020
    • 5:30 – 6:30pm
  • Tuesday, May 12, 2020
    • 5:30 – 6:30pm

Where are they held?

Meetings are held at both the Hawthorne and the APCH site at the dates and times listed above. Refreshments will be provided.

What is the difference between FSC and School Site Council?

School Site Council (SSC) differs from FSC slightly in that one you are elected, attendance is required across six different meetings to discuss the creation of the RISE budget, school safety plan, and Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). SSC is comprised of the school principal, one teacher, one other staff member, at least two parents, and at least one student.

How do I run for School Site Council, and when are those meetings?

More information about joining SSC will be provided at the first FSC Meeting! If you have questions, please contact Kari Croft (Principal) at kcroft@davincischools.org.

Student-Led Conferences: October 21 – 25

Each fall and spring, RISE hosts Student-Led Conferences, or SLCs, which provide an opportunity for students to gather with their family and school team to celebrate their growth and set goals for continued progress.

The goal of SLCs is to give students a chance to practice self-reflection as they learn to constantly monitor their own progress and identify ways to strengthen their learning and accelerate their growth. SLCs also give teachers, advisors, and student stakeholders an opportunity to hear directly from the student how they can best  support them towards their goals.

The schedule for Fall SLCs is listed below. You should expect to hear from your student’s Advisor  to schedule a 30-minute time to meet during the times provided. Please mark the date in your calendar, and come to the SLC prepared to share both celebrations and concerns or next steps regarding your student’s growth and progress.  We’re excited to see you there!

Fall Intersession: October 14 -18

Twice per year RISE hosts Intersession periods to provide students with targeted time to focus on a specific course and expedite progress in content mastery and credit attainment.

Our Fall Intersession is taking place next week: October 14 – 18.

This means that students will not attend regularly scheduled classes, but instead have the option of either signing up for a specific course that will take place 9:00 am – 12:00pm each day, or using the week as their fall break.

Please review the information below to learn more about Intersession sign-up and guidelines. Feel free to reach out to our Assistant Principal, Erin Whalen (ewhalen@davincischools.org) if you have additional questions.

Intersession Guidelines & Expectations

  • If a senior has more than 20 credits left to complete before graduation, s/he will be required to attend the Senior Intensive course to ensure adequate progress towards course completion.
  • If a student signs up for a workshop, attendance to those workshop times is mandatory
  • Students may sign up for as many workshops as they would like.
  • Students are only allowed to be at school during the scheduled times for their workshop(s).

MAP Testing Next Week

Dear Da Vinci RISE Students & Families,

We are excited to officially kick off our blog by informing you of upcoming MAP® testing.

From September 24 to October 3, all students of Da Vinci RISE High will take a Measures of Academic Progress (or MAP®) Growth™ test on a school computer during their Academic Support Block. MAP® Growth™ scores help teachers monitor student performance by measuring achievement and growth, specifically in reading and math skills. While these test results do not impact students’ grades, teachers use the information to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students.

All students, regardless of course-load or weekly schedule, will complete the MAP® Growth™ testing for English and Math. This is the first of four testing periods this school year. Following each testing period, you & your student will receive a Family Report showing a summary of how your child is performing academically.

We are truly excited to focus on your student’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit.

Please read below for some tips on helping your student prepare for testing, and if you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to Kari or Erin!

Kari Croft, Principal (kcroft@davincischools.org)
Erin Whalen, Assistant Principal (ewhalen@davincischools.org)
