STEMEd for Girls is a FREE series of lively, informative, and engaging virtual workshops that will pave the way for your success as you move through high school, into college, and eventually on to your career. Designed for those who want to stand out among their peers, the program:

  • Illustrates what leadership in STEM looks and feels like, emphasizes the rewards of innovation, describes different types of mentorship relationships, discusses what it means to have and expect a sense of belonging in STEM, presents coping strategies, and shares many more skills you can use for advancement and promotion in high school.
  • Demystifies the world of STEM and shows how accessible—and exciting—these fields can be.
  • Explores the different subject areas that you can choose as a college major, including biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, physics, and technology/computer science.
  • Shows the many types of lucrative jobs and careers a STEM education can prepare you for.

Driven by Design LA Youth – Creative Style Competition

Are you between 13-17 years old and passionate about fashion? Here’s your moment to shine! Transform your drawing into a stunning fashion style and bring it to life on the runway. Have a teen model showcase your creation and compete for fabulous prizes!

To participate in the Driven by Design LA Youth Style Competition, a registration fee of $35.00 will apply. Please note that registration is mandatory to participate. To register, click here.

Audition for Pedro Play- TONIGHT 5:30-8:30pm

A new play with music, created with and about the San Pedro Community
-Open to all ages
-No experience necessary
-Nothing to prepare

Some audition dates have passed, but there are still auditions being held on 8/9 from 5:30-8:30pm at Rancho San Pedro Social Hall and 8/10 from 5:30-8:30pm at Angels Gate Cultural Center.

When Jessica is sent to San Pedro on a journalistic assignment, she finds much more than she bargained for. Traveling through Pedro’s rich and colorful past, present and future, Jessica finds a community in the midst of radical change. A romantic comedy with music, PEDRO PLAY explores the meaning of home and features members of the San Pedro community on stage in collaboration with Cornerstone Theater Company.

Cornerstone Theater Company is holding auditions for PEDRO PLAY.

Do you live or work or spend significant time in San Pedro?
Are you a former resident who left their heart in San Pedro?
Come audition for PEDRO PLAY!
No theater experience is necessary and there’s nothing to prepare.

If you’d like to be a part of making this San Pedro community play, but don’t want to be onstage, stop by auditions and introduce yourself. We’d love to meet you!

Rehearsals and performances take place this September and October in San Pedro.

Women in Aviation International is non-profit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation and aerospace career fields and interests.

Join the Greater Los Angeles Women in Aviation Chapter, Fly Compton, and Alaska Airlines in celebrating Girls In Aviation Day at Compton Airport on Saturday, September 23 from 10am – 2pm! Families are invited to join the Compton Woodley Airport for a fun-filled day celebrating International Girls in Aviation Day!

Cxmmunity Esports Readiness Online Program- August 8

For students interested in Game Art, Game Design, or Content Creation:

Cxmmunity welcomes you to a new online workshop for high school and collegiate students interested in STEM and Gaming on August 8th 5:00-6:30pm EST.

This virtual workshop guides participants through resume building and creating their portfolios. Utilizing tools and knowledge about the career paths within the esports and gaming industry, participants will build a portfolio that includes the following:

UCLA Health Sports Performance/EXOS SPEED CLINIC- July 22

UCLA Health Sports Performance/EXOS SPEED CLINIC

Join the UCLA Sports Performance/EXOS for our first FREE speed clinic on July 22, 2023 from 9-12pm at the Campus El Segundo Athletic Field. This event is for student athletes ages 8 and above. You will work with EXOS and the top performance specialist and dial in your mechanics for acceleration and max velocity.

The goal with this speed clinic is to expose student athletes to the elite training that professional athletes are exposed to, while educating and having fun in a great environment. Register here today!

Event timeline:

8:30am- Participants will check in and fill out a waiver
9am- Introduction and warm up
9:30am- Begin movement skill (acceleration & absolute speed)
11:30am- Closing and turf talk with the pros

School Access Coaches Mentorship Program

The School Access Coach Initiative program is designed to pair awesome RISE students with safe, reliable, and motivating mentors!

Given that many RISE students are not provided the gift of being able to focus on being “just students”, many must work, juggle competing priorities, navigate complex social systems (foster care, juvenile justice), care for their own children etc. It’s important that they have consistent and healthy youth-adult partnerships to assist them in successfully navigating their high school experience. School Access Coaches will be devoted to motivating, checking-in on and showing-up for their RISE mentee to add to their support team. RISE Leadership will review and engage selected applicants in a live scan, background check and onboarding process in August. The time commitment will be roughly 1-2 hours a week (check-in calls/texts, visits, school events – Exhibition, POL’s, SLC’ etc.). Click the following links for additional information:

The Art of DJing (4-week Workshop Series)

Location: Compton Library (240 W. Compton Blvd, Compton, CA 90220)

  • This program is FREE for students ages 12-18. Parents are welcome to sit in for support.

Announcements From Real World Learning Director (7.12.2023)

Google’s High School Computer Science Education Program 

Google’s Code Next is a free, computer science education program works with high schoolers to cultivate the next generation of Black, Latinx, and Native tech leaders. These courses are taught by Google employees. Clubs happen for approximately three months each—during the fall, winter, and spring—and are open to 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. However, they target mostly 9th and 10th graders. If you are accepted, you get access to one full year in the program, where you will take part in three different clubs during the fall, winter, and spring semesters. Following that, you will have access to all of Code Next’s online resources, and be named an official Code Next alumnus. Code Next Connect is 100% online and is free for all participants.
