Dear Da Vinci families,

On July 1, 2021, Assembly Bill 104 was passed and per Assembly Bill 104, parents of eligible students can request retention in their child’s 2020-21 grade for the 2021-22 school year.

Who are eligible students?
Students in grade K-11, who received a D, F, or No Credit grade in at least half of their courses during the 2020-21 school year. Per AB 104, 12th grades during the 2020-21 school year are not eligible for retention.

If you would like to request a retention consultation meeting, please email your child’s principal and a meeting will be held within 30 calendar days. You can find a list of all Da Vinci principals on the Da Vinci Schools website at:https://www.davincischools.org/specialization/principals-school-leaders/.

Your child’s school administrator, a teacher, the parent, and the student will participate in the retention consultation meeting. At the retention consultation meeting the following items will be discussed:

  1. Discussion of all available learning recovery options;
  2. Discussion about research on the effects of retention and the benefits of particular interventions and supports for students; and
  3.  Consideration of the student’s academic data and any other information relevant to whether retention is in the student’s best interests both academically and socially.

It is important to note that making a request for retention does not guarantee that your child will be retained. Following the retention consultation meeting, the school will issue a decision within 10 calendar days. Students who are retained will be offered specified supplemental interventions and support. Students who are not retained will also be offered the same specified supplemental interventions and supports, in addition to access to prior semester courses in which the student received a D or F, or some other form of credit recovery.

If your child has an IEP, you do not need to request an IEP meeting to discuss retention, however your child’s IEP will be reviewed by staff prior to the retention consultation meeting to take into consideration any past discussions about retention.

If you have any questions about this process, you can reach out to me directly at ajohnson@davincischools.org or you can reach out to your child’s principal for support. You can find a list of our school counselors on our website at https://www.davincischools.org/specialization/counseling/.

Sincerely,

Dr. Allegra Johnson
Executive Director of Educational Services

  1. Discusión de todas las opciones de recuperación del aprendizaje disponibles;

Atentamente,

Dr. Allegra Johnson

Honoring the life of a beloved RISE student

Dear RISE community,

It is with profound sadness that I write this letter to inform you that one of our beloved students, Maximus Laguna, passed this week on Wednesday, May 26th. Our condolences and thoughts go out to the family and friends of Max. He has been a part of the RISE family since his initial enrollment at our Hawthorne campus in August of 2017. Monday, May 24th, marked a celebration of Max’s 20th birthday. Throughout his time at RISE, Max consistently brought a sense of joy, leadership, maturity, and warmth to our school family. He stood as a beacon of courage in our community, and his growth, development, and feedback were pivotal in shaping the foundation and evolution of RISE.

During this time, as the school community processes this tragic news and copes with grief, we will offer counseling and bereavement services to all of our students and staff in need. Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. Many of us may be confronted with a variety of emotions, which might include shock, sadness, and confusion.

Students may have had no experience in coping with loss of a classmate or for some, this may be far too familiar. We are working to support our students through counseling by our Student Support Services Team (SSS) and our staff through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP). If you feel that your students need to speak to a counselor or other adult, please do not hesitate to call the school and let us know.

Max will be honored in this year’s 2021 June graduation ceremony. If you are interested in providing further support to Max’s family, below you can find a GoFundMe link that will collect funds to be contributed to funeral expenses and any other needs the family has at this time. We know that a sudden loss can be jolting, for this reason we want you to know of our care and support.

Sincerely,

RISE families, many of you may have heard about mask mandate changes by CDC for vaccinated individuals. Before this takes effect in our school, the state must review and then LA County before any of those recommendations are implemented. Until we receive notice from Los Angeles Department of Health, masks are still 100% required on school sites. Please continue to wear your masks, social distance, and hand wash. Thank you!

¡Gracias!
