Da Vinci RISE – Winter Memo

Dear RISE Community,

We hope that you are healthy, safe and in good spirits. Since the campus closure in response to COVID-19, RISE has created a virtual learning experience to ensure the continued academic support and progression of our scholars. Our educational model at RISE provides students with multiple ways to earn credits. Students should be logging into their scheduled classes Monday through Thursday, attending advisory workshops and interdisciplinary labs in the afternoon and completing independent assignments between classes and after school hours. Work should be completed on DreamSeeDo (RISE High’s online learning platform) as well as supplementary programs for specific content classes (ALEKs, Rosetta Stone, Inqits, Achieve 3000 etc.)

As we prepare for quarter 3, we plan to continue the RISE tradition of holding students to the highest expectations in the areas of attendance, academics and credit attainment. We encourage you to meet with your student to  set quarter 3 goals with them. All work completed over winter break will be provided with feedback, graded and allotted the appropriate credits once we return.

Please note that Quarter 3 begins on Monday, January 11, 2021. RISE students MUST be present and login to their first virtual class, as indicated in their individualized schedule (may be found in their PLP- Personalized Learning Plan). Also, as a reminder, student attendance is taken in all courses. Students that do not attend their zoom classes or upload assignments within DreamSeeDo will be marked absent and stakeholders will be contacted.

Special Note: Quarter 3 Advisory Workshop Sign-Ups will open the Week of Jan. 11th. Please ensure that your student registers for their selected 8 workshops (1 college and career, 1 social emotional and 4 of their choice).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your site administrator. Edith Funes at APCH, Rebecca Robertson at Hawthorne and Erin Whalen at New Earth. You can also reach out to me directly for any questions or concerns. I look forward to your continued partnership during our remaining 2020-2021 School Year, and look forward to having your student virtually join us the week of Monday, January 11th!

Sincerely,

Sinceramente,

NWEA Testing: Next Week (12/7)

Dear DV RISE Students and Families,

During the week of December 7th, the students of Da Vinci RISE High will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a school computer. MAP® Growth™ scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth, specifically in reading and math skills. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students. As a Year 4 focus at Da Vinci RISE High, we are striving to provide accurate literacy data to students, stakeholders, and governing boards in order to graduate critical thinkers who possess the skills and passion to create change.

MAP® Growth™ tests are unique, and it adapts to your student’s responses to measure your student’s skill level. If your student answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level.

MAP® Growth™ reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject and have the same starting performance level. All students, regardless of course-load or weekly schedule, will complete the MAP® Growth™ testing for English and Math. This is the second of four testing periods this school year. Following this testing period, you will receive a Family Report showing a summary of how your child is performing academically.

As you are aware, all of our students have their own Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) and this assessment is one more tool to assist us in personalizing the learning pathway and help strengthen your son/daughter’s skills.

We are truly excited to focus on your student’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit.

Sincerely,

RISE Administration

Da Vinci RISE High

How to Prepare Before Testing:

  • Take some time to review your class notes and materials
  • Ask your teachers for help on any concepts you may not understand
  • Make sure to get a good night of rest and at least 8 hours of sleep the night before each assessment.
  • Make sure to eat a healthy breakfast on the morning before assessments.

We want to wish you all a safe and joyous vacation. As a reminder, students are still able to complete work and earn credits when school is on recess. All work will be graded and reviewed for feedback upon our return.

Even during these trying times, we are ecstatic to share that RISE will be having our first set of December graduates! These are students who have completed their credits and will be awarded their diploma at our socially-distanced drive-thru graduation ceremony on December 18th. The entire RISE family is incredibly proud of our students who are defying the odds in truly impressive ways. In closing, we’d like to share our vision:

RISE High will graduate individuals who have a strong sense of self & value of community; who are able to think critically about the world around them; who possess the skills and passion to create change; and who feel empowered and prepared to do so.”

Sign-Up for Fall Intersession!

The end of Quarter 1 is fast approaching and we have some awesome opportunities available during the 2020 Fall Intersession. Intersession is a time when students can take advantage of academic workshops to strengthen their skills and earn course credits! This year, Fall Intersession will be from Monday, October 12th – Friday, October 16th from 9am-12noon. Given the campus closures due to COVID-19, this is an opportune time for students to regain credits that they might have missed out on during the transition to online learning. Students with “senior status” (meaning they are on-track to graduate in December or June) are required to attend intersession to ensure they reach their goals by their projected graduation date!

Please note, Intersession courses are intensive workshops that allow students to hone in on a single subject area in order to gain skills and credits. Given the large number of credits offered during intersession, students are only allowed to enroll in one course. The only exception is for students who wish to enroll in science and WOW (world of work). These are the only two class that are on opposite days of the week

CLICK HERE to sign up for intersession!

The deadline to enroll is Friday, October 9th.

RISE Leadership Team Transitions & Expansion

Dear RISE Students & Families,

Over the past five years, our school has grown and changed in many powerful ways. In fall of 2016 we opened with just 12 students on the campus of Da Vinci Design & Communications. Since then we have been awarded an XQ Super Schools grant of ten million dollars, been selected as a national Teach For America School to Learn From, expanded to three sites serving nearly 250 students, and graduated 75 alumni.

While we are proud of the work we have accomplished together, we believe there is still much to do, and we remain committed to continued growth to ensure we are providing our students with all the opportunities and supports they deserve. To this end, we are excited to share some upcoming shifts in leadership roles that will allow us to make the next steps necessary to serve more students and remain confident in the long-term resources and supports we are able to offer.

On October 9, Founder & Principal Kari Croft will be transitioning to the role of Administrator on Special Assignment part-time in order to focus on long-term policy, funding, and partnership opportunities that will ensure RISE is equipped to provide both rigorous academics and robust wraparound services for years to come. As Kari moves into this new role, we are excited to share that Erin Whalen, who has served as the Founding Assistant Principal and the current AP at our APCH site, will be moving into the role of RISE Principal. Kari will return full-time on April 12th.

Supporting both Kari and Erin will be Dr. Mary Ring, who has been with Da Vinci Schools for 7  years and officially joined the RISE team full-time this July in our new Executive Director position. Together with Dr. Rebecca Robertson, our Assistant Principal at the Hawthorne site, and the new Assistant Principal we will be hiring at APCH, our leadership team will continue to work alongside students, families, staff, and community partners to drive RISE High continually closer to our mission and vision.

As we prepare for these changes, we are available to meet with both students and families to address any questions you may have. Our goal is to ensure this transition is as smooth as possible for everyone in our RISE community.

We are grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us thus far and for the commitment each of you have invested in ensuring RISE continues to serve not only as a school community, but as a home. We look forward to continuing this journey with you.

In Solidarity,

Mary, Kari, Erin, & Rebecca

Da Vinci RISE Needs Your Nominations For Our School Site Council!

Da Vinci RISE is currently working on the formation of its 2020-21 School Site Council (SSC)! As a part of the formation of our SSC, we are seeking student, stakeholder (parent), teacher, staff and partner nominations!

Members of the School Site Council will be asked to attend 6 meetings throughout the course of the 2020-21 school year. These meetings will be scheduled taking into account the schedule and life commitments of all SSC members. Once elected, SSC’s have decision-making authority over the use of funding that is allocated to the school. The SSC annually reviews and updates the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), identifying proposed expenditures for the funds. Lastly, the SSC supports student achievement through continuous development, monitoring and evaluation of the SPSA.

Da Vinci RISE sees parent and stakeholder involvement as imperative to strengthening our partnership and ensuring we are working together to support our scholars. As we work to support our students through the turmoil caused by this global pandemic, there has never been a more crucial time for parent and stakeholder involvement and partnership. We are hoping to nominate at least one parent from each of our Da Vinci RISE Locations (RISE at APCH, RISE at New Earth and RISE – Hawthorne). To nominate, please fill out the google survey LINKED HERE with your name, and/or anyone you think would be great to participate. Thank you in advance for your nominations.

Not interested in SSC but still want to get involved? Please attend our first Family and Stakeholder Collaborative (PTA) meeting on October 7th at 5:30pm. We will share exciting programmatic updates, schoolwide data and seek your feedback on how we can continue to improve our school community.
