Return to School Update January 2022

We hope this message finds you and your families healthy and well.

Return to School

As we prepare for the return to school next week, we are cognizant of the spread of COVID-19, and in particular, the Omicron variant. Today’s update focuses on our return to school plan beginning Monday, January 10, 2022 for in-person learning. Please read this entire email for important information.

The following new requirements have been enacted at all Da Vinci schools, effective immediately:

  • Masking is now required for all outdoor activities where physical distancing is not feasible, except while eating or drinking, due to the new health order from the LACDPH. Students are strongly recommended to wear masks that are well-fitting, non-cloth masks of multiple layers of non-woven material with a nose wire.
  • COVID-19 testing is required for all students and staff who are close contacts of a person who has tested positive for COVID due to a school-based exposure, regardless of vaccination or booster status. Affected employees and students may participate in testing at their school site (more info below)
  • Staff are required to wear upgraded masks (three-ply surgical masks or higher-level PPE)

COVID Testing

We strongly encourage students to secure a COVID test prior to returning to campus beginning Monday, January 10, 2022. Below are several options for testing:

  • Pick up an At-Home COVID Test Kit on Thursday or Friday of this week. This drive-thru event will take place at 201 N. Douglas Street and is open to families from all Da Vinci school sites:
  • Thursday, January 6: 3:00-6:00pm
  • Friday, January 7: 7:30-10:30am
  • Each kit contains 2 tests. The recommendation is that parents/guardians administer one test at home to their student when you receive the kit and then again on Sunday, January 9 or in the early morning of January 10, 2022.
  • Please report at-home test results here
  • A negative test is not required for students and staff to return to school on January 10, but in the event your child exhibits any flu-like or cold symptoms, your child should get tested and remain at home.

Additional options for obtaining a test can be found at the following:

Once school resumes next week, please report any positive COVID results as soon as possible to the Da Vinci Schools Nurse via email at egreen@davincischools.org in order to determine isolation and return dates.

As we return from the holidays, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) has issued a number of advisories. Please be sure to review the LACDPH travel advisory and guidance.

Get Vaccinated, Get Boosted

To find out about availability of boosters for anyone age 16 and up, or to schedule vaccination appointments for anyone age 5 and up, families are encouraged to visit California’s myturn.ca.gov website. Up-to-date vaccination will provide greater opportunity for all students to remain in school and on campus. Up-to-date vaccination status refers to having received a booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine when eligible or having completed a primary COVID-19 vaccine series if not yet eligible for a booster. Students are only considered up-to-date if they have received a booster (when eligible).

We will be communicating with you soon about uploading vaccination documentation. In the interim, please have your child carry either a copy or digital version of their vaccination status at school as it may be required for contact tracing.

Closing Comments

Our priorities remain to reduce transmission, keep our schools open for in-person instruction, and do so safely. We will continue to update you as new information becomes available. For additional questions about Coronavirus in Los Angeles County, please visit the LA County Department of Public Health coronavirus webpage. Thank you in advance for your efforts to ensure that our schools remain as safe as possible when students return to our campuses.

Support RISE High All Year: Make your Recurring Donation Today!

Dear family, friends, & loved ones,

We are in the final week of RISE High’s inaugural Giving Campaign and are excited to share that we have raised nearly $35,000! As begin to wrap up the campaign, we have set the ambitious goal of raising another $15,300 in order to take full advantage of the generous Donor Match from Desolation Hotel.

Meeting this goal is easier than it seems. We only need 75 individuals to commit to recurring donations, and we are confident that our network of supporters can make this happen.

Each day this week, we will be aiming for a specified number of donors to commit to a certain dollar amount to support RISE throughout the year.

Today, our goal is to recruit 25 donors to make one year of recurring donations in the amount of $25.

If everyone on this email signed up for a recurring donation and encouraged one friend to do the same, the goal would be met!

Head over to tinyurl.com/RISEdonate TODAY and join our incredible team of donors. Be sure to update the donation frequency to “Monthly” to ensure your gift supports the work of RISE year-round.

Thank you for all of your continued support and generosity. The work we do would not be possible with you.

Join us this Wednesday to support RISE’s Fundraiser at Chipotle!

Dear RISE Family,

As most of you know, we officially launched our inaugural Giving Campaign last week. We’d love to have as many members of our community as possible show up to support!

Not only is Chipotle donating 33% of all proceeds directly to RISE, but through the generosity of Desolation Hotel, all funds raised from this event (as well as from donations made during the Giving Campaign) will be matched up to $25,000! In other words, you can double your impact by grabbing Chipotle on your way home this Wednesday!

Please see below for information, and share with others who may be interested in joining!

When:
Wednesday, September 22
4:00 – 8:00pm *only*
  Where:
Chipotle – 307 North Pacific Hwy. El Segundo, CA 90245
How:
Be sure to tell them you’re there to support RISE in order for 33% of all proceeds to be donated!

  • You can place an order online using the code ZXCM3N7,    and pick it up on your way home
  • Or place your order in person and either show them the flyer (linked below!), or tell them you’re there to support RISE High.

Assembly Bill 104 – Retention Request / Proyecto de ley 104 de la Asamblea – Solicitar la retención

Dear Da Vinci families,

On July 1, 2021, Assembly Bill 104 was passed and per Assembly Bill 104, parents of eligible students can request retention in their child’s 2020-21 grade for the 2021-22 school year.

Who are eligible students?
Students in grade K-11, who received a D, F, or No Credit grade in at least half of their courses during the 2020-21 school year. Per AB 104, 12th grades during the 2020-21 school year are not eligible for retention.

If you would like to request a retention consultation meeting, please email your child’s principal and a meeting will be held within 30 calendar days. You can find a list of all Da Vinci principals on the Da Vinci Schools website at:https://www.davincischools.org/specialization/principals-school-leaders/.

Your child’s school administrator, a teacher, the parent, and the student will participate in the retention consultation meeting. At the retention consultation meeting the following items will be discussed:

  1. Discussion of all available learning recovery options;
  2. Discussion about research on the effects of retention and the benefits of particular interventions and supports for students; and
  3.  Consideration of the student’s academic data and any other information relevant to whether retention is in the student’s best interests both academically and socially.

It is important to note that making a request for retention does not guarantee that your child will be retained. Following the retention consultation meeting, the school will issue a decision within 10 calendar days. Students who are retained will be offered specified supplemental interventions and support. Students who are not retained will also be offered the same specified supplemental interventions and supports, in addition to access to prior semester courses in which the student received a D or F, or some other form of credit recovery.

If your child has an IEP, you do not need to request an IEP meeting to discuss retention, however your child’s IEP will be reviewed by staff prior to the retention consultation meeting to take into consideration any past discussions about retention.

If you have any questions about this process, you can reach out to me directly at ajohnson@davincischools.org or you can reach out to your child’s principal for support. You can find a list of our school counselors on our website at https://www.davincischools.org/specialization/counseling/.

Sincerely,

Dr. Allegra Johnson
Executive Director of Educational Services
ajohnson@davincischools.org

  1. Discusión de todas las opciones de recuperación del aprendizaje disponibles;

Atentamente,

Dr. Allegra Johnson
Directora Ejecutiva de Servicios Educativos
